The Grand Final as reported by Adam Smith of the Mercury

OHA ended a 20-year senior premiership drought by outlasting Richmond in a windswept  Old Scholars football grand final at North Hobart Oval yesterday.
A watertight back six proved the difference in the 14.9 (93) to 9.19 (73) victory, though the Lions had their chances in front of goal and could have snatched an unlikely
win if not for poor conversion.

The Ships survived an early ambush from their opponents in the opening quarter, with the Lions bolting out of the blocks to kick the first two goals through Adam Daft and the last of the term to edge to a five-point quarter-time lead.  From there the OHA side kicked into gear, holding Richmond goalless for an hour while piling on seven
unanswered goals itself until the 23-minute mark of the third quarter.

A defensive wall of captain Michael Bannister, Joel Doyle and best-afield Callum Garvey repelled attack after attack, while the Lions did themselves no favours by
wasting golden opportunities. The lead of 32 points at the final change appeared enough for the Ships, especially with rain setting in and making conditions
greasy.

But even after conceding the first two goals of the final quarter, the Lions refused to give in and booted the next four to close to 18 points. Matthew Zukauskas then
put the result beyond doubt with his third major of the game deep into time-on in a quarter that went for a ridiculous 37 minutes.  Power forward Sam Bowering
kicked a goal in each term to finish with five, his average against Richmond this year, while the likes of Ashley Banks and Brad Marsland provided plenty of
drive all day.

It was a great day for the Marsland family, with Brad and youngest brother Jason playing in the seniors, while Rod kicked three goals to help the reserves side defeat
St Virgil’s.

After the match, first-year coach Scott McCallum savoured the win, the club’s first premiership since 1988 when it won the senior reserves double, as it did
yesterday.  McCallum is no stranger to success, having filled a cabinet with trophies from his playing days at Clarence, but admitted it was still a
premiership to celebrate.

‘‘All the things I’ve learnt from Clarence is all about work ethic. The boys stuck together and achieved this as a group,’’ McCallum said. ‘‘Each individual grand final
is unique and special in its own right. ‘‘I put this right up with any grand final I’ve been part of. It’s very special and I’m very honoured to lead this group and get over the
line. We have a lot of supporters.  This is 20 years in the making and I guess a bit more special there.’’
Lions coach Heath Barwin, who was among his side’s better players with three goals, was left ruing missed opportunities that could have made such a difference. ‘‘We had our chances, I thought. To kick three goals worth of points was not good enough to get us over the line,’’ he said. ‘‘It seems to be the way against them, we get out to a
lead going into the second quarter and then lapse in concentration. They are not a side you want to lapse against for five or 10 minutes.’

5 October 2008 - Moore success in 2008 for Trent

At last night’s best and fairest count and awards presentation Trent Moore capped off a very successful and satisfying season by taking out the Olga Haines Perpetual Trophy as the Best and Fairest player in the seniors.   In what was an indication of the new breed coming through at the ships, Cal Garvey followed on from his best on ground on grand final day by finishing runner up to Trent.  Not to be outshone veteran 3 time B&F winner Michael Bannister was awarded to coach’s pet award, an award that he has been responsible for selecting over the past two seasons.

In the Reserves the pacy Steve Campbell was successful in defeating ruckman Jimbob Teirney (the legend responsible for our winning of Australia's Favourite Football Jumper) who played the first 15 games of the season in the seniors.  A due reward for effort or both players.

In other awards presented last night Michael Bannister and Warwick Dawson were awarded life membership 12 years after making their debuts with the ships.  Both were also rewarded with premierships medallions as co-captains of the seniors.  For a couple of “Norky” boys this is a great effort.

The Wayne Steele Trophy for the Best Clubman was awarded to Peter Reason who took over the reigns as treasurer following an untimely injury to last year’s treasurer Ross Blaikie.  His stringent control of the finances and work behind the bar was one of the key drivers behind the clubs overall success in 2008.

A full list of trophy winners will be available shortly.  If you would like a copy of the annual report please email us at bruno@ohafootballclub.com and we will see what we can do.

Rod Marsland reaches the elusive 50 as OHA win Senior and Reserve premierships in 2008

The Seniors won their first flag in 20 years under the influence of the coaching staff led by debutanrte Scott McCallum.  In a game in which Cal Garvey was awarded the Stinky Medal for BOG and the last quarter lasted for som e 40 minutes, the side overcame both Richmond and difficult conditions to follow the reserves as premiers in 2008.,

The most efficient Marsland of them all kicked his 50th goal of the season and it was is inpsiration that led the reserves to a first reserves premiership since 1996.  Joel Nicholls won the Brain medal as voted by the umpires but Marsland with his pace skill and ability was the catalyst behind the win.

13 September 2008 – Reserves ensure dual representation in the big show

OSFA Reserves Preliminary final OHA 9.14 (68) def DOSA 4.2 (26)

At Queenborough on Saturday the reserves continued their recent strong form to progress past DOSA and earn the right to meet minor premiers St Virgils. From the opening quarter the ships always looked comfortable and had the kicking for goal been more on target the result would have been beyond doubt at the half time siren.

Fortunately for us the defence superbly led by Bobcat Godfrey, Trav Mcknight and the pacy Jason Freeman held DOSA goalless until midway through the 3rd quarter. The pace and skill of Chris Hogan all over the ground was a crowd pleaser and his late injury sent ripples through the crowd and players from both teams.

Up forward Rod Marsland pressed to within a goal of hi 50 and an early conversion on Saturday is anticipated. It was one of those games where “all played well” would have been a very apt description.

Unfortunately there have been questions asked of SOS and his key coaching staff who refused to drag Rowdy in the last 5 minutes of the game despite numerous requests from the large crowd in attendance and the game sewn up. Instead new father Brendon Bateman was forced to engage the irate crowd in intelligent conversation.  As a result of this there may be a need to reappoint next year in order to right the wrongs.

OHA dominates OSFA team of the year…click here for the team
On Monday 8 September 2008 the Old Scholars named the association team of the year. Of the 22 players selected 7 were from the ships. Trent Moore and Scott Probert were rewarded for their defensive efforts throughout the season while Ashley Banks and Sam Bowering were rewarded for their goal kicking prowess.

Three more players were selected on the interchange, first year coach Scott McCallum along with 200 gme veterans Michael Bannister and Craig Grace. This is a fair reflection of the team’s efforts throughout the season. While there are several others unlucky not to be rewarded, to have 1/3rd of the team of the year is an outstanding effort.

Debutant McCallum was also named coach of the year and this award is well deserved. If reflects the efforts of the coaching staff and in particular the efforts of bench master Chris Garrett.

6 September 2008 - Seniors through to the big show after a scare against Richmond while the reserves have a more comfortable victory against the same opponent to progress to the prelim.

OHA have won their way into the Grand Final after a hard fought win over Richmond at Richmond in the 2nd Semi-Final.

The Ships started nervously and as a result trailed 2.1 to 3.4 at the first change. OHA fought back in the middle part of second term and hit the front before conceeding the last four goals of the quarter to trail by 14 points at the main change.

Momentum stayed with Richmond for the start of third term and they added the first two goals to extend their lead to 26 points. However OHA began to work their way into the game and with better ball movement and run from the backline added 7.4 for the quarter to hit the lead by 13 points at the last change.

OHA kept control of the game in the last term adding a further five goals and restricting Richmond to three and win 21.13.139 to 17.7.109.

Callum Garvey in the ruck, Joel Doyle in defence and Ashley Banks through the midfield were instrumental in the second half turn-around whilst Stuart Probert, Craig Grace, Trent Moore and Matt McDermott were good throughout the match.

Despite being regularly up against two or three defenders Sam Bowering contributed five goals, Banks and Scott McCallum three each and Damien Dillon and Matt Zukauskas two apiece.

Following on from the seniors the magoos played a cut throat 1st semi final, also against Richmond.  It was the expectation from this game that kept the crowds away in Sydney as our NSW fans were glued to their mobile phones in the hope of constant updates.

In an unfortunate turn of events for the association it appeared as if the ships entered the game with a senior team which resulted in a lopsided affair.

Led again by Jimbob Teirney in the ruck OHA dominated fro the first bounce.  Tierney’s dominance allowed first use of the ball to a dominant midfield brigade led by Nathan Butterworth, new dad Brendon Bateman and Matt Phillips.

The dominance of these players allowed Steve Campbell to play a “Luke Hodge style” sweeping role across half back, creeping forward to set up many forward thrusts while snagging a couple of goals himself.  Rod Marsland continued his recent impressive form and bagged another 6 to take his season to within 4 of the ½ century.

In a dominant display where all players contributed (even Rowdy to some degree) the ships ran away with the game eventually winning by 142 points in front of a small number of loyal supporters.

Next week sees the boys taking on DOSA in the preliminary final at Queenborough commencing at 11.30.  All support for SOS and the boys would be appreciated.

OHA finished the roster season in style with an impressive 92 points win over second placed Richmond at Richmond.

Played in good warm conditions another high scoring opening quarter eventuated with OHA nailing seven goals, although conceeded four to lead by 19 points at the quarter time. With everyone contributing OHA continued to control the game throughout the second term adding five goals to one and extending the lead to 45 points at the main break.

Trent Moore, Craig Grace, Craig Unsworth and Scott McCallum continued to dominate around the midfield in the third term regularly feeding Sam Bowering and Stuart Probert in the forward line resulting in OHA adding a further four goals to one point for the quarter.

The Ships didn't ease off in the last quarter kicking 4.9 to Richmond's two goals to leave the final score 20.20.140 to 7.6.48.

Moore, Unsworth, Brad Marsland and Ashley Banks in midfield and defenders Brendon Bateman, Jason Marsland and Callum Garvery were all among OHA's best throughout.

Bowering kicked seven goals to take his season's tally to 124 while Banks contributed four and Moore, Matt Zukauskas and Probert two apiece.

Next week OHA meet Richmond again at the same venue in the Second Semi-Final.

Also yesterday the reserves accounted for next week's opponent in a preview of the first semi final by 114 points.  Up forward Rod Marsland and Snealky Bryant showed the oposition a clean pair of heels in kicking 7 and six respectively.  The most impressive performance on the day however belonged to Jimbob Teirney who was dominant all over the gorund.

23 August 2008 - A disappointing result in Craig Grace's 200th click here for a look at the results from the Sunday Tasmanian
OHA suffered a disappointing loss after a last quarter fade out in round 19 against DOSA.

In Craig Grace's 200th game the match began as an open running encounter in good conditions. With James Tierney doing well in the ruck and Grace racking up possessions across half back OHA had slightly the better of the first quarter to lead 5.1 to 4.3 at the first change. The second term continued along similar lines with both sides exchanging goals. By half time OHA had maintained a narrow lead 10.5 to 9.4.

The third quarter was OHA's best period adding seven goals for the term. Craig Unsworth, Scott McCallum and Trent Moore gained control of the midfield and Brett Mitchell and Sam Bowering began combining well in the forward line which resulted in the Ships skipping out to a 26 point break during the term before DOSA narrowed the gap to 17.8 to 14.6 at the last change.

Despite OHA going in the last term with the momentum DOSA lifted and quickly closed the gap to hit the front by the middle of the term. OHA responded and regained the lead but were not able to hold on and DOSA snatched a four point victory 20.7.127 to 19.9.123.

Craig Grace in his milestone game was outstanding for OHA as was Dan Ryan with the task of holding the DOSA's dangerous forward Matthew Honey.

Sam Bowering, Stuart Probert and Ashley Banks all kicked three goals and Jason Marsland, Scott McCallum and Matt Zukauskas contributed two apiece.

In next week's final roster match OHA travel to Richmond in a dress rehearsal for the following week's second semi final also against Richmond at Richmond.

16 August 2008 - Seniors sail along while reserves show ladder leader how much they have improved click here for a look at the results from the Sunday Tasmanian

OHA produced a stunning comeback to overcome St Virgil's in Round 18.

In wet and cold conditions OHA started as if they'd rather not be there and as a result St Virgil's dominated the opening term setting up a 28 point break at the first change. After a stern reminder from Coach Scott McCallum of what's expected at the break, OHA came out with an improved approach in the second quarter. Although St Virgil's continued their momentum and kicked the first goal of the term, OHA then added five straight to close the margin to one point at half time.

Going to the non-scoring end during the third quarter OHA needed to contain St Virgil's, but did even better keeping the Saints goal-less and adding four more majors to jump away to a 23 point break.

OHA's dominance continued into the last term kicking five of the first six goals before St Virgil's nailed the last three goals of the match to leave the final score 16.15 to 12.11 and OHA victors by 28 points.

Craig Grace, Callum Garvey and Stuart Probert were instrumental in the comeback, while Luke Taylor blanketed dangerous St Virgil's forward Brendan Davis and Warwick Dawson did likewise to Marcus Parker.

Of OHA's 11 goal-kickers Sam Bowering kicked three despite the wet conditions with Andrew Chilcott, Matt Zukauskas and Trent Moore all slotting two.

9 August 2008 - A day cruise in Sandy Bay click here for a look at the results from the Sunday Tasmanian

OHA gained some revenge for their loss in the corresponding game earlier in the season by thumping Hutchins at Queenborough in Round 17.

The start of the match was extremely tight with both teams' commitment high which left the scoreline just 2.4 to 1.4 in OHA's favour at quarter time. OHA increased their run during the second term and made the most of their scoring opportunities. With Stuart Probert taking control across half forward and Dan Ryan, Craig Grace and Warwick Dawson dominating in defence the Ships stretched their lead to 27 points at the main break.

Momentum stayed with OHA into the third term and the Ships piled on eight goals to two for the quarter to put the result beyond doubt. The final quarter saw more of the same with OHA running out winners 19.10.147 to 5.11.41.

Sam Bowering was the main beneficiary of the Ships midfield performance with nine majors, whilst Ashley Banks again kicked three and Damien Dillon and Probert two apiece.

Along with Bowering, Probert and Matt Zukauskas in the forward line, Dawson who blanketed Hutchins' Adam Palfreyman, Grace, Bannister and Ryan in the backline, Trent Moore, Cam Geason and Craig Unsworth in the midfield were among OHA's best although there were no passengers.

The early cruise also saw a comfortable100 plus point win.  The tem, without the leadership of Robert Blanden who was embarrasing himself at Pontville, started the day strongly and continued to follow the current in running over a disappointing Beans reserves team.  The early game saw the long awaited return of Andrew Chilcott in a successful outcome that returned 6 goals.  His returned was bettered by the elusive Rod Marsland who fired a quiet 7.  Marty Kroon played the rolle of dummy fillfoward billiantly and still manage to snavel 3 of his own.

Better players were easy to find with those to stand out getting mentioned by the coach.  Another great all around game by Jason Guinan who has continued his recent good form, Jimbob Tierney , Steve Campbell, Nathan Butterworth and Travis McKnight.

25 July 2008 - Ships sail over the Rainbows click here for a look at the results from the Sunday Tasmanian

Sam Bowering brought up his 100th goal of the year as OHA returned to the winners list in Round 16 against University.

In a first quarter where OHA didn't take advantage of its opportunities the Ships did do enough for Bowering to nail the two goals needed for his ton followed by a huge celebration from 'Bowser' and teammates.

Starting the second quarter with a 21 point break OHA continued to play well but struggled to penetrate the University defence however did enough to extend the lead by a further three goals by half time.

With Stuart Probert dominating at Centre Half-Forward and Trent Moore, Damien Dillon and Michael Bannister in control of the midfield the flood gates opened in the third term to see OHA pile on eight goals to three to lead by 75 points at the last break.

Momentum continued with OHA for the last quarter and the Ships extended the lead to win 26.19.175 to 8.7.55.

Probert was OHA's best throughout whilst Nathan Winch with a defensive role on University's captain, Callum Garvey running from Half Back and Matt Zukauskas off a wing including three goals in the last quarter were among OHA's best.

Bowering, Dillon and Moore all ended the game with four goals, whilst Ashley Banks, Probert and Zukauskas contributed three apiece.

18 July 2008 - a midseason weekend in drydock - OHA suffers its third loss of the season at the hands of Richmond in Round 15. click here for a look at the results from the Sunday Tasmanian

The match started with OHA dominating on the scoreboard kicking the first five goals to set up a 21 points lead at quarter time. Richmond worked their way into the match during the second term and were more efficient in front of goal adding four goals to OHA's one, although both sides had the same number of scoring shots. As a result OHA's lead was reduced to six points at the main break.

Richmond continued to hold the momentum into the third term and added the first five goals of the quarter to establish a break before led by Michael Bannister and Brad Marsland OHA lifted and kicked the last three goals of the quarter leaving Richmond in front by seven points at the last change.

The last quarter proved a slog with both sides adding just one goal. OHA had three chances to win the game in the last two minutes but the opportunities resulted in only minor scores and Richmond held on for a four point win.

Michael Bannister, Warwick Dawson and Dan Ryan stood out for OHA in defence whilst Brad Marsland and Craig Grace were good contributors across half forward and on ball. Sam Bowering and Ashley Banks finished with three goals apiece.

11 July 2008 - The Cadbury mud fails to bog the Ships.  Seniors extend ladder lead while the Magoos edge closer to 2nd spot on the ladder click here for a look at the results from the Sunday Tasmanian

OHA extended its winning streak to six matches with a 65 points win over DOSA in Round 14.

Despite being played in wet conditions OHA's skill level stood out from the opening bounce and by quarter time had kicked five goals to one to lead by 23 points.

With Damien Dillon and Matt Heenan in control of the midfield, Trent Moore blanketing DOSA's dangerous full forward Scott Allan and Stuart Probert outclassing all opponents the second quarter saw more of the same to result in OHA leading by 39 points at the main break.

By three quarter time the margin was extended further to 63 points and at full time the scoreline read 15.17.107 to 6.6.42.

Dillon, Heenan, Moore and Probert continued to be among OHA best throughout whilst Michael Bannister and Matt McDermott across half back, Matt Zukauskas in the forward line and Joel Doyle in the midfield also played particularly well.

Impressively eleven players contributed to OHA's goal tally for the match with Sam Bowering kicking three to take his seasons tally to 95 and have all players and supporters looking forward to the Round 15 encounter against Richmond with Bowering a good chance to bring up triple figures.

The reserves continued their winning form in defeating the second placed DOSA by 12 points (and we do mean 12 POINTS).

Inaccuracy in the wet conditions almost proved fatal.  Veteran Mark Monks was strong in defence and the skill and pace of Robert Blandon all over the ground were telling factors in getting the ships over the line. (PS  all squared up now Bob?). Rod Marsland was another telling factor in the forward line and his four goals were very telling in the final result.

John Padman continued his good form from recent weeks and was instrumental in setting up may forward moves.  Unfortunately the name T. Carter has appeared on the best players list in a blight on the good name of the club (Sorry Turbo but it had to be said).

Victory next week will set up a serious run for second spot on the ladder through the last round.

4 July 2008 - Seniors get revenge for last time loss against St Virgils - Undermanned reserves push ladder leader - Click Here for OHA scores

OHA have jumped to a decisive two game lead at the top of the table after defeating St Virgil's in Round 13.

Despite entering the match without a number of injured players including coach Scott McCallum, co-captain Warwick Dawson and vice-captain Craig Grace, OHA had the better of the first term to hold a 14 point break at the first change.

The second quarter did not go to plan for however and OHA added just one point for the term. Despite the lack of scoring the backline led by Matthew McDermott on St Virgil's dangerous full forward Marcus Parker, Dan Ryan, Stuart Probert and Nathan Winch kept St Virgil's to just one major and OHA still led by seven points at the main break.

Joel Doyle, Matt Heenan and Craig Unsworth worked their way into the match during the third quarter but the scoreline remained tight with OHA adding three straight to St Virgil's 2.1 to see OHA in front by 12 points at the final change.

With the game up for grabs at the start of the last term OHA led by Callum Garvey across half forward, Sam Bowering at full forward and Trent Moore in the centre lifted and piled on nine goals to five to take the points 16.11.107 yo 10.9.69.

Best for OHA were McDermott, Ryan, Winch and Probert in the backline, Garvey, Bowering and Brad Marsland in the forward line and Damien Dillon on-ball. Bowering finished the match with seven goals while Marsland and Garvey each slotted two.

The reserves pushed ladder leader St Virgils right from the opening bounce.  Injuries to key players in the seniors and the unfortunate loss of personal to cover left the reserves in a position of who dares wins.  Perhaps the biggest loss was the highly skilled, youthful and lightening fast Robert Blanden from a freak training injury.

OHA started the better throught he midfield drive of Padman and Bryan and a close knit backline.  An eight point lead at quarter time was just reward for effort.  A repeat effort in the second quarter saw the lead increase to an even 2 goals and a shcok upste was on the cards.

Nigel Oliver was keen to impress after a disappointing showing in front of the legends last week but was unable to do son.  While there appeared to be a fair percentage of ball in the forward line after half time, a falure to convert in fron tof goal cost the ships any chance of victory.  Stewy Luck, Dan Orr and Marty Kroon each kicked 2 goals in what was an unrewarded game by the boys.

In another highlight former director Andrew Brockwell provided insightful comment and called the came at the 20 minute mark of the last quarter.  After some convoncing and with only minutes left on the clock, Dave Hill agreed that the fat lady had in fact found voice.

Next week we travel to Cadbury point to visit Caramello Koala and play the DOSA roosters

28 June 2008 - Legends get the ships home

In front of a large crowd of past players and supporters Round 12 saw OHA gain some revenge over Hutchins for their loss in their previous encounter.

Hutchins started the game the better kicking the first goal and having most of the play however OHA gradually worked their way into the match and held a one goal lead at the first change. OHA continued to take control of the match during the second quarter adding five goals to two to lead 8.6 to 4.8 at the main break.

When OHA kicked the first two goals of the third quarter it appeared the Ships would run away with the game and win comfortably but Hutchins lifted and OHA lost its run resulting in Hutchins adding seven goals for the quarter to close to within five points at the final change.

Hutchins continued their momentum into the final quarter and hit the lead in the early stages before led by Brad Marsland, Stuart Probert, Dan Ryan and Luke Taylor OHA lifted and regained the lead before establishing a four goal break. Hutchins kicked the final two goals of the match to leave the final score 19.10.124 to 17.12.114.

Probert was OHA's standout performer across half back and in the ruck whilst Marsland, Ashley Banks and Damien Dillon were among the best through the midfield and in the forward line. Trent Moore kept Adam Palfreyman in check before moving into the midfield and Nathan Winch blanketed Jamie Harris after quarter time.

Sam Bowering added seven goals to his seasons tally whilst Michael Bannister chipped in with three.

Led by Sam Bowering OHA chalked up another win against bottom of the table University in Round 11.

University produced a more spirited display than in the teams' previous two meetings however Bowering's straight shooting and a last quarter onslaught ensured victory for the Ships.

Kicking into a difficult wind in the first quarter OHA won plenty of possession but turnovers resulting in only a six point lead at the first change. During the second quarter on-ballers James Tierney, Trent Moore and Joel Doyle began to dominate the stoppages and with the backline led by Dan Ryan and Matt Heenan lifting OHA added 5 goals to 1 in the second term to lead by 32 points at the main break.

The third quarter was another scrappy period with the lead slightly extended to 37 points. When University kicked the first two goals of the final term to close the margin to 25 points it was game on but OHA responded adding 11 goals for the remainder of the quarter to win comprehensively by 82 points.

Sam Bowering ended the match with 11.1 in a dominant display with Ashley Banks and Brett Mitchell playing perfect support roles with five and three goals respectively. Trent Moore, Damien Dillon and Joel Doyle controlled the midfield throughout for the Ships whilst Stuart Probert, Matt Heenan and Dan Ryan stood out in defence.

The reserves also made it back to back to back victories and consolidated thier position in the four.  Led by (veteran) Pete Reason who kicked 5 goals the ships gained an early lead and never let go of the ascendancy.  Fellow veterans Mark Monks and Brendon Bateman were again in the best and continue to push for a senior game.

Also worthy of mention were the efforts of President Tim Carter marshalling the troops on the boundary.

Next week OHA meet Hutchins at Geilston Bay who defeated the Ships in their last encounter.

14 June 2008 - the Ships go bush and travel home with 2 victories Click Here for OHA scores or click here for a look at the results from the Sunday Tasmanian

OHA rounded out the first half of the season with a comprehensive win over Richmond at Richmond Oval.

The Ships produced another of their trade-mark opening quarters to break away to a 52 point lead at the first change. With Cal Garvey, Luke Taylor and Dan Ryan in control of the defensive half, the Marsland brothers and Joel Doyle dominating the midfield and Sam Bowering and Ashley Banks capitalising on the scoreboard OHA already had a stranglehold on the game.

OHA continued to control play in the second quarter and with Stuart Probert continuing to blanket Richmond coach Heath Barwin added five goals to three to extend the lead to 65 points at the main break.

The second half became more of a slog with the lead 70 points at three quarter time before Richmond slightly outscored the Ships in the last to leave the final score 21.18.144 to 12.7.79.

Best for the Ships were Ashley Banks who also slotted four goals, Jason Marsland until leaving the field with a sprained ankle, Callum Garvey and Joel Doyle whilst Sam Bowering added five goals to take his seasons tally to 67.

The reserves continued the form found before the bye and recorded a comfortable scoreboard but hard fought win.  Veteran Bob Blandon showed the form that made him a much sought after player in the 1990s and fellow veteran Marty Kroon made the most of his opportunities to kick 4 up forward.  Dan Orr continues to push hard foe senior selection with another strong performance both down back and up forward as required while Jarrod Kean also continues to impress.

Next week we travel to the College of Knowledge to take on an improving University on their home turf.  The following week is the big one- the past players unction at Geilston Bay where we go head to head against reigning premier Hutchins who defeated us last time we played them.  Get along and support the ships.

31 May 2008 - Ships hit the right current and sail home in the seniors and reserves Click here for scores

OHA returned to the winners list following an up and down performance against DOSA in Round 9.

A key reason for the Ships previous victories had been a quick start and after two poor weeks this returned in the first quarter. OHA nailed five goals to none in the term to lead by a handy 31 points at the first change.

The second quarter was the highlight of the match for the Ships adding eight goals to one to lead 13.6.84 to 1.5.11 at the main break. Sam Bowering and Brett Mitchell with seven goals for the half between them, Scott McCallum in the midfield and Joel Doyle and Callum Garvey running hard from half back were the main architects of the match winning break.

OHA added the first goal of the third term before things quickly changed and DOSA had the better of the quarter. With injuries leaving no fit players on the bench by midway through the term and DOSA's Matthew Honey firing up, DOSA closed the gap to 46 points at the final break.

OHA lifted at the start of the last but DOSA continued to make in-roads into the Ships lead. After a disappointing second half OHA eventually won 20.12.132 to 15.9.99.

Brad Marsland was one of the few winners for OHA in the second half while Trent Moore finished a good days work on DOSA coach Scott Allan.

Next week the competition has a weekend off before OHA travel to meet the in-form Richmond on 14th June in Round 10.

In other good news the reserves also benefited from the reutrn of several key senior players to record a resounding victory over the leadder leaders.

24 May 2008 - a second loss against Saints Click here for scores

OHA suffered its second successive loss of the season against second place St Virgil's at New Town Oval in Round 8 this week.

The Ships went into the game still minus a number of key players, but confident of bouncing back after the loss to Hutchins in Round 7.

OHA had the better of the first quarter but did not take advantage of their possessions and led by just one point at the quarter time break. The second quarter proved more productive for the Ships adding six goals to three to lead by 19 points at the main break.

OHA continued to control the early stages of the third quarter before momentum swung and St Virgil's worked their way into the game. After successive goals and finally an after the siren major at three quarter time the Saints had snatched the lead, by two points, at the final change.

The Ships lifted early in the last term with Jason Marsland slotting two goals and regained the lead, but midway through the term St Virgil's took control of the match and ran away winners 15.14.104 to 13.8.86.

Dan Ryan and Joel Doyle stood out for the Ships across half back, while Trent Moore and Sam Bowering with seven goals worked well in forward line. Matt McDermott in his first senior game for the season presented well at Centre Half Forward.

17 May 2008 - A First Loss for the ships in 2008

OHA suffered its first loss for the season against Hutchins in Round 7 this week.

Played at Queenborough, OHA went into the match minus a number of key players and it showed from the opening bounce. The Ships lacked intensity from the outset and were lucky to be only 12 points down at the first change.

Led by Cam Geason in the ruck OHA lifted at the start of the second term, but with Craig Unsworth being heavily tagged and a lack of support for Sam Bowering in the forward line OHA still trailed by 10 points at the main break.

The third quarter was all Hutchins adding five goals to one. If not for the work of Trent Moore, Dan Ryan and Jeremy Stuart in defense the margin would have been more than the 32 points it was at the final break.

OHA finally showed some of the form from previous weeks in the final term by kicking the first four goals of the quarter to reduce the margin to 8 points with four minutes remaining. However they had left themselves with too much to do and Hutchins kicked a sealer to win 11.11.77 to 9.9.63.

Sam Bowering kicked six of OHA's nine goals to take his total for the year to 50 while Trent Moore was outstanding at full back. Dan Ryan and Jeremy Stuart accross half back held Hutchins up a number of times while Cam Geason, Damien Dillon and Scott McCallum were OHA's other best players.

10 MAY 2008 - Another double at home, this time against University - Ships Scores available

The Ships continued on their winning way against cellar-dwellers University in Round 6 this weekend.

Despite continuing to miss some key players through injury, the Ships came out firing, kicking three goals before the ball has been within University's attacking fiftty.

By quarter time thanks to Sam Bowering's straight shooting, and Craig Unsworth, Scott McCallum and Joel Doyle's control of the stoggages OHA led 8.5.53 to 1.3.9.

The second quarter wasn't so one sided with OHA's forwarding line functioning poorly adding just four goals to three. After a stern reminder from Scott McCallum at half-time of what is expected the Ships rectified the situation in the third term, adding seven goals to nil to be 105 points in front by the final break.

Despite the interchange bench again filling up with injuries OHA won the last quarter five goals to two, to win 21.21.167 to 6.6.42.

Sam Bowering with eight goals and Ashley Banks with four were the main contributors to the scoreboard. Craig Unsworth, Michael Bannister, Scott McCallum and Jason Marsland controlled the midfield while Luke Taylor's run from half back was significant.

Next week the Ships travel to Queenborough to face Hutchins.

4 MAY 2008 - Seniors extend winning run to 5 games against Richmond while the reserves get back on the winners list.

OHA have completed the first round of matches with a clean slate following a Round 5 win over Richmond.

Played at Geilston Bay in good football conditions OHA controlled the match from the outset leading 7.4.46 to 1.2.8 by quarter time. Sam Bowering nailed three majors in the opening term whilst Craig Grace, Scott McCallum and Craig Unsworth dominated the clearances.

The Ships didn't dominate the second term to the same extent adding only two goals, however Richmond managed just one behind and OHA led by 53 points at the main break.

Michael Bannister and Andrew Chilcott took control in the forward line in the third term which resulted in an eight goal quarter for the Ships, while Richond replied with two.

OHA struggled to maintain the intensity in the last term largely due to injury resulting in no fit players left on the interchange and Richmond won the quarter by five points. The final score saw OHA 22.15.147 to Richmond 9.10.64.

Through the midfield Craig Grace, Michael Bannister and Scott McCallum were standouts throughout while Craig Unsworth continued his outstanding start to the season. Trent Moore and Dan Ryan controlled the defence while Sam Bowering with five goals and Andrew Chilcott with four were the most productive forwards.

27 APRIL 2008 - MIXED RESULTS AT FREDDO LAND

Again there were mixed results for the Ships this weekend.  The Seniors got home with a comfortable victory while the reserves again failed to show their potential and suffered another percentage damaging loss.  Sam Bowering at full forward in the seniors continued to impress with a quiet 11 and is building an unassailable lead at the head of the association goalkicking table.  As a result of the loss in the reserves the wolves are baying for a change in captaincy (well at least Jap thinks Rowdy should be sacked).

How the bench saw it

The Ships remain undefeated after a comprehensive Round 4 win over DOSA at Caburys.

Both teams went into the match missing some key players and the opening ten minutes was tight as expected. As the quarter progressed OHA began to dominate around the centre through Craig Unsworth, Scott McCallum and Craig Grace while Sam Bowering (who took the field around 10 minutes after play started after flying back from Melbourne for the match) at Full Forward took control. As a result OHA added six unanswered goals to lead by a comfortable 34 points at the first break.

Surprisingly the Ships started the second quarter poorly and DOSA closed the gap. However with Stuart Probert moving onto Brendan Rogers and shutting down his influence, and Trent Moore continuing to stay on top of Scott Allen OHA kicked four goals late in the quarter to lead by 43 points at the main break.

The second half was all one way traffic with the Ships adding five goals to one in the third term, and ten goals to nil in the last to eventually win 28.19.187 to 8.5.53.

Four goals in the final term lifted Sam Bowering's tally to 11 for the match, while Andrew Chilcott nailed four and Brad Marsland, Ashley Banks and Joel Doyle all ended with three.

Craig Unsworth was outstanding for the whole game in the midfield and accross half back, Luke Taylor and Callum Garvey provided plenty of run from defence and Craig Grace and Stuart James worked will together throughout.

19 APRIL 2008 - MIXED RESULTS AGAINST ST VIRGILS

In a tight encounter the seniors recorded a 2 point win over the other undefeated team St Virgils in a high quality game watched by a large crowd.  The scores are available and a match report from the bench is below.

OHA became the only undefeated team in the competition following a thrilling round three victory over St Virgil's.

In front of a crowd bigger than at most SFL games the Ships celebrating Michael Bannister's 150th game held on in a nail biter to win by just two points.

The opening quarter started well through an Ashley Banks goal but St Virgil's gradually gained the momentum and had the best of the term. A goal on the siren to Matt Zukauskas closed the gap for the Ships but still trailed by five points at the break.

Things changed in the second quarter however, with OHA taking command in every area and thanks largely to five goals in the term by Sam Bowering held a five goal lead by the 20 minute mark. St Virgil's hit back late in the term to reduce the Ships lead to 26 points at the main break.

St Virgil's continued their momentum in the third term whilst the Ships struggled to win their share of the ball. Five goals to two in the Saints favour left the margin just four points at the final change.

The final quarter was a classic struggle with both defences determined not to concede any score. However it was OHA who managed to hang on to the lead throughout winning 14.8.92 to St Virgil's 13.12.90.

Defenders Callum Garvey, Joel Doyle and Luke Taylor were outstanding for OHA throughout with their marking and attacking run, whilst Jason Marsland and Ashley Banks who finished with four goals used their pace to advantage. Matt Zukauskas stood out across half forward whilst Scott McCallum, Trent Moore and Damien Dillon, until suffering a hamstring strain in the third term, controlled the contests. Sam Bowering finished with seven goals continuing his strong start to the season.

The reserves were well below best today and unfortunately this was not the week to play below par.  In a game of few positives the one bright point was the return to the field of Jeremy Stuart after a severe broken arm several years ago.

Next week the Ships travel to Cadbury's to meet DOSA.

13 APRIL - THE SHIPS RECORD A DOUBLE OVER THE BEANS

Yesterday saw OHA score comfortable victories over Hutchins at Geilston Bay and maintain position on top of the ladder.  The scores are available by clicking here

The Ships continued their good start to the season with a comfortable Round 2 win over Hutchins at Geilston Bay.

During a scrappy opening term the Ships failed to capitalise on their opportunities and held a narrow two-point lead at the change. The move of Michael Bannister to Centre Half Forward at quarter time had an immediate impact in the second term, with the Ships adding five goals to one and leading by 24 points at the main break.

The third quarter produced the best period of the match with the Ships midfield and forwards dominating the first ten minutes of play. With Cam Geason in the ruck, Damien Dillon, Scott McCallum, Craig Unsworth and Ashley Banks winning the stoppages and Sam Bowering and Andrew Chilcott making the most of their opportunities in the forward line four quick goals to open the term and a total of seven for the quarter put the Ships in a commanding position. Hutchins kicked three late goals to reduce the margin 46 points at the three quarter time break.

Six goals to two in the final quarter saw the final score 20.13 133 to 9.11 65. Sam Bowering was the focal point in the forward line with five goals, Michael Bannister at Centre Half Forward and Cam Geason in the ruck during the second half both had a big impact on the game, whilst Warwick Dawson did another outstanding job at Full Back on Adam Palfreyman.

The win sets up a top of the table clash next week at Geilston Bay against St Virgil's.

10 APRIL - MCCALLUM NAMES TEAMS FOR MATCH AGAINST REIGNING PREMIERS

Tonight saw the return (albeit temporary) of club legend Andrew 'ABO' Neil from the coal mines of Queensland.  His ability to avoid a shout was noted, particulalry for those fortunate to be fellow members of Club 101 (See target of Crawf's Comment).  The more things change the more they stay the same.  During the periods of reminiscencing on how he deserted the 1996 reserves premiership side seeking riches in Queensland Abo turned his attention to the all important announcement of teams for this weekend.  First year coach Scott McCallum tonight named his senior squad for this weekends match against last years premiers Hutchins.  In a shock at the selection table club legend Craig Grace was unable to make the selected 22.  The final 22 lucky players are:

DIllon, Monks, Taylor, Winch, Doyle, Banks, Marsland, James, Bowring, Chilcott, Zukauskas, Unsworth, Godfrey, Phillips, Moore, Geason, Dawson, Garvey, Marsland, Bannister, Tiernry and McCallum.

A FIRST UP DOUBLE AGAINST UNIVERSITY

Last Saturday saw a sensational first up performance for the Seniors and Reserves down at University.  These scores were outstanding with the Seniors getting home by 154 points and the Reserves also scraping home by a margin of 145 points to just miss out on bragging rights.  It has been a long time since the Ships have begun a season so impressively.  Click on the link on the left to the 2008 results for full details.

Goal kickers were plentiful in both sides with boom recruit Sam Bowring leading the way with 8.  Regular players over the past 6 or 8 seasons were heartened to record such a first up win.  The match report in Monday’s Mercury (6 April 2008) referred to the game as the OHA show from the opening bounce.  We asked for comment President Tim Carter responded that the club is taking it one week at a time.

Next week sees the first home game at Geilston Bay against reigning premier Hutchins who will no doubt be keen to impress after losing at home to St Virgils last week.

Get along and show your support and encouragement.

OSFA Roster Released - The 2008 season roster has been released and is available by clicking here.  The season commences on Saturday 5 April with the first home game against the Beans the following Saturday, 12 April.

1982 Premiership coach Geoff Doyle is likely to be a regular attendee during season 2008.   This season sees the return of the Doyle name to the playing ranks at the Ships.  Geoff's son Joel has journeyed from Bellerive to Geilston Bay with new coach Scott McCallum.  A hardworking midfielder he will be seeking to match the deeds of his father who was a standout captain coach in 1981 and 1982.  We may hear more words of wisdom from the Doyle clan such as the unforgettable"I'll only say this ONCE and then I'll REPEAT IT".  Joel's hardness at the ball will be a welcome addition to the midfield.

This year sees us celebrate the 20th anniversary of our most recent senior premiership in 1988.  Further details of the celebration will be made available after the announcement of the roster.

In recent news, our departing coach (but continuing player) and multiple Best & Fairest winner Michael Bannister and his wife Julie are pleased to announce the safe arrival of a second daughter Abigail to join Olivia on 28 December 2007.  Details placed on the local rag on 3 January 2008 are below.

Club legend Peter Bullock passed away in November 2007 after a long battle with cancer.  He will be sadly mised by his friends around the club, particularly those who had the privelidge of playing with him in the 1970's and 80's.  Please see below an article in the Mercury newspaper but sports journalist Brett Stubbs

Popular Hobart sportsman dies

ONE of Hobart's best-loved sportsmen has lost his battle with cancer. Peter Bullock died at age 49 last week after a 2 1/2 -year battle with an extremely rare form of cancer. Bullock was a regular in Tasmanian fun runs and relays, especially the Huon Valley Classic, but was best known on the sporting field for his football exploits. Despite losing his left hand in a butcher's mincer at the age of 13, he played 15 senior games with North Hobart between 1977-78 as a tap ruckman. But Bullock played most of his football career with OHA in the Old Scholars Association. He refused to let the loss of his hand be a disability, and won the Old Scholars Association best and fairest in 1979 and 1985 and was named in OHA's team of the century. Bullock worked for 30 years at the Australian Taxation Office and was a keen swimmer, body surfer and bushwalker. He is survived by his wife Kate Aldridge, and by sons  from his first marriage, Sam, 24, and Nick, 22.
