AGM Completed, new VP and New Committee Members
On Monday night, the Club AGM was held and a few changes took place.
After 2 years as Vice President, Stuart Luck had decided to stand down from that role, and the Committee. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Stuart for his work during that time (and previously as a General Committee member). A fantastic Club person, he's been a great support for myself when i haven't had enough hands to get things done, and has in the most recent season done a fantastic job in arranging playing gear, most of which was available by round 1 (a highly irregular occurrence). While he steps away from the Committee, I'm sure we'll still get plenty of support from Lucky when we need it.
Stepping up as our Vice President for 2012 is Josh Connors. A veteran of 21 games for the club, it's fair to say that Josh's major contribution has been off the field, although he was an integral part of the 2008 Reserves premiership side, getting the first "touch" of the day (when he pushed Ferg over, and gave away a free kick before the siren). The joint winner of the Best Clubperson award in 2011, we know that Josh will continue to invest massive amounts of time to make sure the Club is ticking along and everyone gets to enjoy it. Congratulations to Josh, and welcome to the Executive.
We also had two other new members join the General Committee. James King has joined the ranks, which is great for us to have him staying around while recovering from his 2011 season ending knee injury. With his youthful exuberance, i'm sure we'll find plenty of ways to harness his energy. Our other new member is Scott McLennan. Scott was a player and Committee Member of the Club in the late 60's/early 70's but has been out of the state for almost 40 years. He's now returned, and was keen to get back involved with his beloved Ships. We look forward to working with Scott, to help encourage more of our past players to re-visit the Club during future seasons.
So, the line-up is as follows:
President: Jason Freeman, Vice President: Josh Connors, Treasurer: Peter Reason, Secretary: James Teirney, General Committee: Thomas Austen, Tim Carter, Damien DiIenno, James King, Scott McLennan, Joel Nicholls, Nicolas Skeggs.
Cheers - Freezer |

16 July - Banna's 200th celebrated in style in front of Past Players
Seniors 22.11 - 143 def. DOSA 6.7 - 43
Reserves 10.9 - 69 def. by DOSA 11.8 - 74
The 2's started the day slowly in an important game to try to pull up their losing streak and went into half time 6 goals down. Delivery into the forward line was poor and the DOSA midfield was getting their hands on it in clear air. Half time couldn't come soon enough and after some soul searching during the break, things looked up in the third. Bowser started to get his hands on it and Browny at his feet saw us turn the tables and go into the final break with an 11 point lead. We couldn't keep that intensity up though and in a see-saawing final term, DOSA came out in front by 5 points. Borrie Burnett in the midfield set the workrate tone all day and the backline was solid, led by Gav Vincent, Freezer and Ris who had the job again on Honey. Boof Hinchen also continued to find some form in his best match for the year.
The Seniors came out with a spring in their step, breaking Banna's Banner and looked set for a big day to celebrate one of the Club's most decorated players' milestone match. With Jury out, Mantis lined up at full forward against his old side, and there must have been some worries from the DOSA camp, knowing what he was capable of as a full forward previously. He didn't let the Past Players Day crowd down either, slamming through 10 goals, with the final one a thumping shot from 50 out. The boys were consistent for the first 3 quarters, kicking 5 goals in each, and then finished off with a 7 goal final term. Banna continued his good form of late with a best on ground performance, and was joined by a few other veterans, Doc Ryan off the half back flank, Macca making his presence felt in the forward line, Mantis as mentioned, and Unsy, returning to the side and for the first time on this website being referred to as a veteran. The younger brigade was represented by Oaky in the ruck, whose ground level contesting continues to help the unballers out.

11 June - Jury on Fire again v Uni
Seniors 21.18 - 144 def. University 8.4 - 52
Reserves 20.17 - 137 def. University 4.8 - 32
On a soggy day over at University, it looked like it was going to be a hard slog of wet weather football on display, but both sides showed some skills and ball use that would be expected on a dry day for big wins.
The 2's were slow out of the blocks with the first 5 minutes not seeing the ball go into the forward half. Then they switched on. Chris Hevey in the ruck started to get his hands on it around the ground and when T-Bone Scott went into the middle, Heves proved a handful for the Uni defenders. With veteran Stephen Cox recalled after a couple of years out due to Glenorchy responsibilities, the T-Bone to Cox combination in the middle reminded many in the crowd of the early 2000's dominance of the duo. With Alfie Hollick and Roota working hard through the middle as well, the Ships went into half time with a 6 goal lead.
The second half saw the Backline keep Uni goal-less and the midfield ramped things up. The standout for the day was Chris White on a wing. Often left unattended, but also contesting and winning the footy when outnumbered, he continued what has been a great start to his OHA career. The forward line worked hard to keep the ball in, with Boof Hinchen contesting both in the air and on the ground. Picking the best 6 was hard to do with many unlucky not to be recognised in what was a great effort across the board.
The Seniors looked like they were on from the start, and with Raven fixing a few matchup challenges early, they weren't troubled for much of the day. The Captain led from the front once again, possibly being tagged, but hard to tell as he had his hands on it so often, and continued to show his opponents how damaging he can be when he gets it in clear air. Through the midfield Ben MacMurray kept bobbing up, especially with Oaky giving the midfielders first use. Moorey and Mantis were hard at it, wherever they were asked to play while Boony had the job on Reeves, and made him earn every kick he got.
The story of the day though was probably The Devil, Scott Jury. He didn't play against Uni in the first round due to Suspension, and looked to be making up for lost time, kicking goals at will in the second half. Eventually finishing with 11, he probably could have had a few more, but also contributed to a few for teammates. Uni's defenders won't be looking forward to the next time they match up. |

30 April - Ships bring back 2 wins from Snug
Seniors 25.15 - 165 def. Channel 11.7 - 73
Reserves 9.18 - 72 def. Channel 6.4 - 40
It wasn't a pretty day of football for much of it, but in the end the Ships came away from Snug with 2 wins and their undefeated records intact.
The 2's battled for 3 quarters to break away with Channel hitting the contest hard all day and having the better of the contested possesions around the ground. Innacurate kicking didn't help either but much could be put down to the pressure applied by the home team. The backline was held up by a misely Balcs and Doc whose run and set up were a feature of the day. Rex Limbrick and Alfie Hollick were tireless against their old Club, Rex normallly the last one up off the bottom of the pack and Alf's smart left foot getting us out of trouble regularly. Gav Vincent showed he's getting better with age, putting his stake on a wing for the season, and Big Grabba presented well all day up forward, and could have come home with half a dozen, but after a case of the yips early finished goalless.
The Seniors finished with what looked like a comfortable win, but didn't have it their own way either. While they had a lead all day, the half time margin of 26 points showed that the workrate could lift, and that Channel were matching it around the contest. The Langford's combined on numerous occasions with Wig's use out of the back half being matched by Bung's delivery into the forward line... the benefit of which was enjoyed most by Veteran Scott McCallum who slotted through 9 goals. Some onlookers felt that had he been more favourable of the umpiring standards he may have a had a couple more come his way to break through the magic double figure barrier. Happy to take a support role, Bowser managed 7 of his own, while Ben MacMurray and Jimmy King were tireless through through the middle and back half of the ground. |

22 April - Inaugural Night Game a Success After Seniors Slow Start
Seniors 17.12 - 114 def. University 15.12 - 102
Reserves 16.18 - 114 def. University 5.6 - 36
A bumper crowd turned out for the first night game to be played at Geilston Bay, and they certainly weren't dissappointed. The Reserves kicked things off in the late afternoon/early evening twilight and seemed to have things under control in the first half, the biggest struggle being the finishing around goal. The half time score of 4 goals 10 to Uni's 1 goal 4 meant there was confidence in the rooms that if the goal kicking improved, we'd run away with it.
The second half saw that improvement and a 5 goal to 1 third quarter effectively ended the contest, backed up by another 7 goals in the final quarter. Grabba Teirney was challenged prior to the game to lift after a slow start to the season, and was dominant all over the field playing the majority of the game in the ruck. Doc Ryan controlled the backline (won't be the only time we say that this year) while the run of Duck Gillies, Mantis, Gav Vincent and Dan Walton was backed up by the hard work of Bater, Browny, Heves and Rye Hunt.
Then, the main event got underway.
The crowd was a buzz when the siren sounded to start the Senior game, but the boys couldn't fire a shot early. Uni moved the ball with polish and gave plenty of opportunities to their forwards, with Reeves kicking 3 in the first quarter out of the 7 they rattled on to our solitary goal from captain, Bung Langford.
The second quarter was all about containment, to get to the half time break and reassess. Auksorius kicked two for the quarter in his debut for the Club as we pegged one back to go into the long break 5 goals down.
The second half saw things start to turn. Archer went from key back to Centre Half Forward, and between himself, Bung and another debutant in Hayden Thorp, the Ships started to lift themselves into the contest. Marc Thompson started getting the ball in clear air and his lethal right foot was giving the forwards good supply. It resulted in a 6 goal to 2 quarter leaving us with a 3 point margin to make up in the last.
Having looked dangerous all night, Banga put his foot down in the last, running through the lines and finishing with 2 goals for the quarter. Macca and Banna's attack on the contest and marking at important stages helped to hold off Uni counter-attacks and Bung stood up to sink a long goal which put us in front.
The end result was a 2 goal win which showed great spirit from the boys after being 8 goals down early in the second quarter. |

16 April - Season Underway With Solid Wins Over St Virgils
Seniors 17.20 - 122 def. St Virgils 10.8 - 68
Reserves 16.11 - 107 def. St Virgils 10.17 - 77
After 5 months of pre-season, the Ships finally took the field for premiership points against St Virgils and left New Town with 2 solid wins.
The 2's took a while to get going, and looked like they were just staying in touch through the first 3 quarters of the game before letting loose in the last. The solid work of Bateman in the midfield, and the majority of the back 6 meant that while St Virgils held a lead, they couldn't get far enough away to put the Ships out of it. Andrew Riseley played one of his best games for the Club at Full Back, repelling countless St Virgils foray's forward.
The second half saw Mantis moved into the middle with Duck Gillies, and the run of Rye Hunt start to worry the Saints. By the time the last quarter started, these 3 were getting their hands on the footy, and an unlikely forward target in PJ Stanley stood up to kick 3 goals, and pull in a hanger in the middle of the ground. It sparked an 8 goal quarter to St Virgils' 2, with the boys prevailing by 40 in the end.
A fiery start (resulting in a Jury report) to the Senior match set the tone for a hard fought first half, with both sides throwing themselves in. OHA's wayward kicking around goal meant that what could have been a 4-5 goal lead was just 12 points at quarter time. However, Wig and Vehicle were gathering possessions at will, so the signs were good early. The lead was stretched to 30 odd points by half time, and it was OHA's match to lose.
The second half scoreboard didn't reflect the Ships' dominance, again with the accuracy around goal costing us percentage. But with 5 players (Oakford, King, Watkins, Fenton, Whitelaw)making their debut for the Club, and another 2 (Unsworth, Moore) back from extended breaks, the boys were showing signs that the game plan will be handy once it settles in. Oakford contested well in the Ruck, while Jury presented as we need him to to kick 5 goals. Skeggsy cruised around the backline with some pinch-hitting in the ruck, and Bung Langford lifted in the second half, in his first game as Captain. |

Another New Sponsor on board for the 2011 Season
The Club is excited to announce that it will this year be supported by Margaret River winery, Warner Glen Estate. We will be stocking their "Frog Belly" range of wines in the bar throughout the season, and will have information on hand in the Clubrooms for those that may wish to purchase directly from the vineyard (there's also a wine tasing night on the cards). As far as we know, we are the first point of sale for Warner Glen in Tasmania, and look forward to a successful partnership. For more information about the winery, click on the logo above, or below.

Final practice match v Sorell
Our final practice match for the 2011 pre-season was against Sorell on the 26th of March. The boys were ready early and after a mini training session as the warm up, sprung into action after the first bounce, things looking ominous when Jury kicked 2 in 2 minutes to start proceedings.
The forward line was looking dangerous with Jury and new boy Auksoriuos moving well, to then be joined by Mantis in his first hitout for the pre-season.
Best for the first 3 quarters (before the Reserves were substituted in) were Unsworth, Wig Langford, Kingy, MacMurray, Thorpe, Jury and McCallum. The old and the new look to be blending well. |
| |
Dodges a good hitout
Saturday the 19th saw the boys go at it with Dodges Ferry, in what has turned into an annual practice match between the two clubs. With 6 "quarters" to play, both Clubs put out their strongest 22 for the first 3 which was an entertaining display.
Dodges got the jump in the first quarter, winning the clearances and capitalising on some quick ball movement to take a double figure lead into the first break. After some inspiring words from Raven at quarter time, the Ships went out more focussed and ready to implement the new game plan that had been worked on all pre-season. In a 5 goal quarter, while holding Dodges to only minor scores, the Ships were back on top. Wig Langford was setting up from the back half and with Boony presenting well at CHF, things were rocking along. The third quarter was a pretty even affair, with the highlight being a Banna "screamer" in the goal square.
Best players for the Ships in the first 3 were Wig Langford, McPherson, Skeggs, Moore, Oakford, Thompson and Burnett.
The second set of 3 quarters saw some of the Reserves boys rotated through while a few Seniors went off for a shower. With Dodges putting on a fresh side, we managed to keep the lead set up early. |

Good Friday Night Game Confirmed
The Club will be part of history on Friday the 22nd of April, when we play in the first OSFA Good Friday game, and also welcome our new lights, by playing in the evening. With a big crowd expected, it will be great to see our fantastic venue lit up for the first time, with premiership points at stake.
Get along early to see the Reserves kick off at 4.30pm. The Seniors will follow at 7.00pm. The canteen offerings will be suitably adjusted with seafood options, and the bar, of course, will be open. |

First Practice Match completed
On Friday the 11th of March, the Club had it's first hitout for 2011 against Lindisfarne at Noth Hobart Oval. While the first 5-10 minutes was very "practice matchy", things started to fall into place after that, with some of the new style of play that has been the focus of training throughout the preseason breaking through.
It was the first time we'd seen Ocha, Thorpy, Browny, Fitzy, Oaky, Jaffa and Wiz in Australia's favourite jumper, and the mix of the old and the new was mouth watering at times.
Focus turns now to Dodges Ferry on Saturday the 19th. |

Preseason Training Update - 25 November
2 weeks down and the boys are getting into things nicely. Week 1 saw a focus on testing, which will be revisited across the pre-season. Early standouts were Andrew Risely on the skills testing, Zak Burnett for push-ups and sit-ups, Sam Hunt and PJ on the 20m sprint and Tim Orchard on the 2.7km Natone Hill Time trial.
Week 2 saw us kick off on a nice warm night with a mix of skills work and running early, into some game style stuff later. A shock appearance from 2008 Premiership defender, 2006 Senior B&F and Team of the Decade member Matt McDermott was a great sight, while Wizz doubled up on the running... just for fun. Thursday night was a bit damp and a committed group got stuck into a circuit with Arch and Raven on the whistle. |
