The Rigger 's Report:
Round 8 of the 2012 OSFA season saw the Ships heading away to face University on what was a less than perfect Saturday morning, and while the new drainage at Geilston Bay had afforded the boys a good surface to train upon during the wet week previous no-one could be in any doubt that the soft Uni wings and tacky pitches in the middle would soon see the contests of the day deteriorate into a scrappy battle of wills with little-to-no room for displays of skill and finesse.
And so it was that the Reserves boys arrived for pre-match preparations and as if being stuck in the smallest change-rooms on earth wasn't enough they also found themselves with only 21 men (Willy to rock up by the first bounce, which apparently he took to mean ‘come along whenever you feel like it' so he was kind enough to grace us with his presence with about 5 mins left in the first half), no Captain (VC Tommy's commitment coming under question as he put work before the team), no footballs (as they were sitting in the back of Freezer's ute out at Brighton) and no John-Boy or Nails for strapping and rub-downs (which left assistant coach King to roll his sleeves up and try to penetrate Niko's Christmas-ham thighs with some deep heat). Furthermore, the absence of a runner left head coach Skeggsy to don the fluoro shirt, but on the up-side the team sheet featured both M. Bannister and T. Orchard who brought with them some valuable experience which would come to show during the match as they ably co-ordinated stoppages (of which there were plenty) and maintained structures, an area which had to date been lacking somewhat. Of the match itself Coach Skeggsy's implorations to his charges to find some pig in them and take the game head-on come what may seemed to have resonated as blokes like Duck Gillies, Trevor Read, Rye Hunt and ruckmen Grabba/Gobby (haha) gave some drive through the midfield whilst the back 6 featuring the likes of new boy Sammy, club cult figure Ads, full back revelation Troy and the-artist-formerly-known-as Jordy ensured that the hard work up-field wasn't wasted. Also enjoyable to see was some strong performances from a couple of fast improvers such as Johnny Brown and Tommy Wallmark who both played their roles beautifully and did some hard in and under work when called upon (although Johnny did need to be talked to about sliding into contests knee first after the front teeth of a couple of Uni blokes were lucky to come away intact). A good spread of goals up forward including one each to latecomers Tommy and Willy as well as one to P.Reason, who turned back the clock to 1998 with some strong leads and dainty footwork put enough of a dent in the scoreboard to see the lads hang on for a very gratifying 2 point win! That has them second from bottom on the ladder on even points with this week's opponents Hutchins so here's hoping for another big effort from the lads to see them keep moving upward.
The seniors match ran a little differently as even before it began there was a strange feeling as though Uni were battening down the hatches and bracing themselves for an onslaught, which was surprising given the Round 1 pantsing they had so capably delivered our boys back at the Harbour but there you go. Assuming this perception was correct then the first quarter probably did nothing to reassure them as a 10 scoring shot to 5 display of dominance around the ground did not result in perhaps as big a scoreboard lead as it should have however it was clear that all the momentum was with the Red, Green and Blue. Early signs indicated that Charger McCallum was on course for a big game whilst a few of this year's promoted reserves boys, in particular Rizza who looks to have become more accustomed and confident in his role in the backline were keeping their opponents honest and then some. Skeggsy's jaunt in the runners kit for the Scooby Doos appeared to have warmed his pegs up nicely and he continued to cover significant ground throughout the second quarter taking some strong overhead grabs along the way (running at about $1.28 for the B&F at this early stage). High rotations on and off the bench showed that the coaching staff were staying on top of things whilst the fresh legs through the midfield and half forward line enabled blokes like Browny, Licka and Borrie to give the best accounts of themselves, working feverishly around the feet of an on-song Arch. Bowering was pulling out his usual tricks for most of the day (and showing yet again that there are precious few in the comp who can hinder him when he hits his stride) ending up with 5 sausage rolls whilst Jaffa, Boony and Wig looked all but impenetrable across half back. Wig's couple of 60m drop punts with the wet ball off 2 steps throughout the day were particularly nice to watch.
The early barometer on Charger proved accurate as he went on to claim B.O.G honours, Mantis showed that even without the trademark gloves on he's as safe a bet as ever (although if he pays any heed to the crowd they'll be back next week by popular demand alone), Freezer's captaincy of the 2's may well remain on ice indefinitely as he continues to earn his keep in the 1's, Smooth Zakauskas played one of his best for the year and after playing two weeks in a row the rumour mill is going into overdrive at the prospect of Beechey playing full time, which would be a fantastic boost given the considerable hole left in the wake of Bewick's departure to the fire service (another of these blokes putting his career ahead of the club… Fair dinkum…). Seniors across the line by a comfortable 44 points and looking a good chance to come up for another win against Hutchins for next week's ‘72/'82 Premiership reunion weekend. Should be a cracker, get along and support the boys and of course join some of OHA's greatest past servants for a beer and a chat! |

1 March - Captain Announced
The Club is pleased to announce that Ben Langford will be leading the Seniors (and Club) for the 2012 season. Having joined the Club in 2009, Wig's on-field performances for the past 3 seasons have seen him finish top 5 in the B&F each year, and we look forward to seeing his on and off field leadership make a mark on the playing group. |

20 January - Senior Assistant Coach Announcement
The is excited to announce that Stuart Whitelaw will be joining the Club as a Playing Assistant Coach for season 2012.
Most recently his footy was played in Victoria, but having had stints there and with Clarence, his experience on and off the field will be a great asset to the Club. |
| |
16 January - Reserves Coach Announcement
The Club is excited to announce that Nic Skeggs will be coaching the 2's in 2012.
Skeggsy has been at the Club since 2010, winning the B&F in his first year and finishing 3rd in 2011. A natural leader with his actions on the field, we can't wait to see how he shapes the side. |

Sad News for the Club
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Robert Newton on 11 January, aged 66.
Bob was the most decorated player in the 93 year history of the Club, having been, or received the following – Club Coach ('69-‘71 & ‘76), Club Captain ('67-'71 & '76), Association B&F (3 times), OHA B&F (4 times), State Representative (10 times), State Captain, All Australian Representative, All Australian Captain, B&F at AAFC Carnival, B&F Tasmania.
Our thoughts go out to Bob's family and friends at this time. |

Twenty20 Wrap Up
On 10 January, to kick off the return to training after the Christmas break, the boys put together a couple of teams to play off in the pre-season T20 cup. Boonie led one side, and Tommy the other.
In a hard fought contest, Boony was probably the difference, making a truckload of runs (67 n.o.) in the total of 123. The highlight of the first innings was a hat-trick to crowd favourite, Pistol Pete Reason, getting rid of Orchard, Gillies and D-Rizz by shattering the stumps each time. Tommy's side struggled with only 2 making double figures and only 11 overs being faced. In hindsight, Pidge probably should have been sent in earlier than 9, with him then topscoring with 21, while Skeggsy stood up early in the innings with 17. In the end, they were probably lucky to get to 71 (sundries scored 13). |

AGM Completed, new VP and New Committee Members
On Monday night, the Club AGM was held and a few changes took place.
After 2 years as Vice President, Stuart Luck had decided to stand down from that role, and the Committee. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Stuart for his work during that time (and previously as a General Committee member). A fantastic Club person, he's been a great support for myself when i haven't had enough hands to get things done, and has in the most recent season done a fantastic job in arranging playing gear, most of which was available by round 1 (a highly irregular occurrence). While he steps away from the Committee, I'm sure we'll still get plenty of support from Lucky when we need it.
Stepping up as our Vice President for 2012 is Josh Connors. A veteran of 21 games for the club, it's fair to say that Josh's major contribution has been off the field, although he was an integral part of the 2008 Reserves premiership side, getting the first "touch" of the day (when he pushed Ferg over, and gave away a free kick before the siren). The joint winner of the Best Clubperson award in 2011, we know that Josh will continue to invest massive amounts of time to make sure the Club is ticking along and everyone gets to enjoy it. Congratulations to Josh, and welcome to the Executive.
We also had two other new members join the General Committee. James King has joined the ranks, which is great for us to have him staying around while recovering from his 2011 season ending knee injury. With his youthful exuberance, i'm sure we'll find plenty of ways to harness his energy. Our other new member is Scott McLennan. Scott was a player and Committee Member of the Club in the late 60's/early 70's but has been out of the state for almost 40 years. He's now returned, and was keen to get back involved with his beloved Ships. We look forward to working with Scott, to help encourage more of our past players to re-visit the Club during future seasons.
So, the line-up is as follows:
President: Jason Freeman, Vice President: Josh Connors, Treasurer: Peter Reason, Secretary: James Teirney, General Committee: Thomas Austen, Tim Carter, Damien DiIenno, James King, Scott McLennan, Joel Nicholls, Nicolas Skeggs.
Cheers - Freezer |
